Music theatre, a presentation of visual poetry, physical performance and fire.
Albatross was an epic drama telling the story of heroes caught in the turmoil that ended the “romantic age” at the beginning of the 20th Century. These heroes are Antarctic explorers. Following in the wake of the Ancient Mariner they sail their ship to the world of the penguin, while back home Europe was engulfed by the Great War.
Multiple skills were demanded from the cast, including dance, mime and aerial performance.
Music played live on stage, and the story is tolled through the song lyrics borrowed from the verses of Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
This large-scale open-air music theatre performance, funded by Art Council England, was premiered in Oldham, 26 May 2003.
